Happy New Year! The calendar has cut off another year. . . Any new years' resolutions??? How do you feel about having your nuts cut off? Or, if you are a woman reader, what about having your clit cauterized or sliced off?

These are probably decisions you will never have to make. However, castration and clitoridectomies have been performed for centuries. They are sometimes voluntary, but most of time, involuntarily performed. For the sake of all you squeamish men out there, and curious females, I will restrict the rest of this column to castration. Oh boy. Technically, castration means removal of the scrotum, testicles or penis.

In early Rome, male castration was quite common. And some women enjoyed watching the castration of men as a means of sexual arousal. It is reported that Theodora, Emperor Justinian's wife, liked to masturbate while watching men being castrated. Emperor Nero had his male lover castrated to pass as female. Then they had an elaborate wedding ceremony and Nero presented his new "bride" with a dowry and feminine wardrobe. A renowned prostitute from Afghanistan had her lovers seized and castrated after coitus. So much for repeat customers!

Today, in our "kinky" sex world, pseudo castration is often used in S/M scenarios–this plays on one of mens' biggest fears. Pseudo castration is carried out through verbal threats or a variety of modified and consensual genital torture.

Male castration, as mere fascination or reality, is a controversial topic in the news today. Sex offenders often opt for (usually chemical) castration to lighten a sentence, or as a means to hinder their libido. They hope it will break their compulsions–mostly involving rape and pedophilia. Some states are proposing castration as a sex crime penalty.

On a more gruesome note, castration is common among mutilation murders. The genitals of the victims are eroticized in a number of bizarre ways. The predator may want to consume them or discard them because they believe genitalia to be evil–responsible for their uncontrollable lust. This is particularly true in cases of genitally dismembered prostitutes.

When most people think of castration, they often think of eunuchs. Charmed!!!!! A eunuch is a man who does not have functioning testicles, or whose testicles and/or penis have been removed. You may be wondering, "Why would this act be purposely performed?" In middle eastern countries, it was common for slave traders to castrate male slaves. They were then sold as guards, servants, slaves and managers. In the Orient, castrated men were also used as slaves, servants, cooks, musicians, guards, executioners and torturers. Without functioning male organs, they were less likely to cause trouble. And, of course, they couldn't sire any unwanted offspring. Sort of like a testosterone and sperm free zone. This was around the 7th century but, incredibly, it is still practiced today. In parts of Africa and Saudi Arabia, eunuchs are used as slaves in harems.

And here is the topper: the Catholic Church has a law that no Pope or priest may rule who has been castrated or whose genitals are otherwise deformed. And, oh my! oh my! bet that makes the choir boys happy!!!! OOOOPS!! Until next time, this is Snickers (Snatchlady Labarr) saying, my crotch is staying just like it is!!!!
